In the latest podcast episode of A Fine Balance: Work-Life Balance Confessions, out today, I dive into the lessons I’ve learned about the transformative power of gratitude and its profoundly positive impact on work-life balance.
Drawing from the real-life experiences of past podcast guests, I explore how cultivating gratitude has shaped their perspectives, helping them find greater balance between work and everything else in life, and enhancing their overall well-being.
Dictionary definitions of “gratitude” describe it as being a “feeling of thankfulness or appreciation”; and a “quality of being thankful”.
A feeling. A quality.
But more than that, in the descriptions I explored when preparing for this episode, I found that it’s also described as being a “practice“.
Gratitude is not a default state of mind, even for the most gracious, fortunate, or optimistic individuals. While some may be more naturally or circumstantially inclined toward it, it is a feeling, a quality, that everyone must consciously cultivate in order for it to arise—and then actively practice to experience its full effect.
What I’ve observed, is that doing so is worth the effort. The benefits to both your own work-life balance, and that of those around you, is notable.
From journaling and meditation, to mindful habits like appreciating the world around them during daily commutes, this Work, Life, Balance Lesson episode uncovers some of the diverse ways that former guests of the podcast have described harnessing gratitude within a work-life balance context.
Nature very often comes up as an element that facilitates a person to do this. So perhaps it’s unsurprising that this episode was inspired by my recent podcast interview with a self-employed gardener, Joe Roukin.

One morning this week, with the podcast edit on my mind, I found myself subconsciously following the advice I’d been summarising, encouraging my thoughts to consider what I felt grateful for as I started my day with a school run and a dog walk.
Walking through a park that I cut through regularly, my eyes were drawn to a bright flash of purple nestled in the frosty grass. I stopped in my tracks to take a closer look and admire the pretty colours and how the frost was melting in the morning sun to form a glistening dew on the petals. I did in that moment feel grateful: for the flower, for the thought-provoking podcast, and a myriad of other things. Doing so gave me a greater sense of calm too as I slowed down my pace, and focussed my thoughts.

In so doing, I was struck by how powerful a work-life balance lesson this is, and its potential for far-reaching impact.
I hope listeners will find that too, and I will be interested in hearing how it stops others in their tracks, as it did for me.
