On Accountancy, Regaining Balance After Heartbreak, and the Power of a Good Night’s Sleep – NEW PODCAST EPISODE OUT NOW

When things feel right at work, it becomes so much easier to find a balance with everything else in life.

And when things don’t, everything else can feel off kilter too.

In the latest episode of the A Fine Balance: Work-Life Balance Confessions podcast, I sit down with Victoria Mortimer, a chartered accountant whose career has taken her from one of the four largest professional services firms in the world, to in-house brand roles, to managing her own personal finances.

For Victoria, feeling balanced hinges on three key aspects of the job that she’s doing:

✅ The work is interesting
✅ The work feels meaningful
✅ The work environment is pleasant — including the team, culture, and even the office space itself

But there’s one more non-negotiable: sleep.

Without it, none of those things quite land the same way. With it, they become the foundation for clarity, motivation, and emotional steadiness—even in the midst of personal upheaval.

Throughout our conversation, Victoria and I also talk about the fluidity of balance—how sometimes, it’s okay to throw yourself into work as a distraction or a grounding force. Other times, it’s just as important to pull back and make space for what’s going on outside of it. The key is knowing what you need, and giving yourself permission to shift gears.

You can listen to my interview with Victoria on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you usually get your podcasts. And please subscribe, rate and review – apparently it makes it easier for others to find us, so they too can benefit from Victoria’s enlightening and inspiring work-life balance story.
