Sometimes it’s nice to be told what to do.
No vague steers. No waffly suggestions. Just cold, hard, clear instructions.

When it comes to the pursuit of work-life balance, where each person’s unique situation requires a bespoke approach, explicit guidance is not easy to come by. Because what works for one person won’t necessarily work for another.
However, in this first episode of Season 5 of the Work-Life Balance Confessions podcast, listeners are in for a treat in the form of some very direct tips from a guest who is well-qualified – both academically and from her own personal experience – to dish out advice on the subject.
Her name is Erika Coleman, an organisational psychologist who supports high-performing women avoid burnout.
Throughout our conversation, Erika shares some nuggets of evidence-based wisdom on how to pursue a work-life balance that works for you, with definitive guidance, including:
- Questions to ask yourself and others to improve and maintain your sense of balance
- Best practice on utilising sleep to manage your sense of balance
- Some practical steps to pull yourself back from spiralling into a panic attack

Maintaining balance in times of adversity isn’t easy – or always possible. Hearing how others have regained their balance after a “fall” can be a comfort. But, receiving explicit suggestions of tried and tested techniques that have worked for others, can be invaluable.
I hope that listeners will take heart from hearing Erika’s story – including aspects of grief, burnout, business loss and panic attacks – and appreciate her pragmatic advice on how to overcome some really tough moments on both sides of the work/life equation.
