Here’s what I’m letting go of in 2026.
They’re just three little words, but they mean a lot.
A. Fine. Balance.
These were the words that I chose as the title of my maiden blog post. And they were the natural choice for the name of my website. And subsequently my podcast.
“A fine balance” summed up my personal perspective of juggling work with other things in life. That there’s a very fine line between feeling like you have everything in equilibrium, to feeling utterly overwhelmed and compromised.
But times have moved on. And my ideas for the blog and podcast have evolved.
So, for 2026, I’ve made what feels like a bold decision: to shorten the podcast title from A Fine Balance: Work-Life Balance Confessions to simply Work-Life Balance Confessions.

The content will remain the same.
I’ll still be interviewing people from all walks of life about how they pursue a balance between the work they do and everything else that matters to them.
And I’ll still be interpersing those episodes with my observations of the commonalities that emerge – the challenges and solutions that interviewees tell me they have experienced in their pursuit of balance.
But, the name will be that bit different; and that bit shorter.
Here’s why:
Putting the ‘Confessional’ Nature of the Podcast Front and Centre
Work-life balance choices are extremely subjective and personal. They are shaped by a person’s upbringing, the influences they were exposed to growing up – things or people that either inspired or repelled them in their formative years;
They are shaped by personal circumstance – financial or familial obligations;
They are shaped by who you are, what you want, what you need, what is expected of you, your aptitudes, your interests, your desires, your obligations.
Once a podcast interview begins, I never quite know which direction the conversation will take. Invariably though it taps into some deep-held private thoughts, beliefs, assumptions or memories. And there’s a confessional element that tends to rise to the surface. It’s not uncommon, for example, for guests to remark that they’ve never thought, or been asked before, about the things we cover.
So including the word “confessions” in the podcast name indicates to listeners and guests what they can expect from the conversations I host. And in so doing, I hope, entice people to listen in, and create opportunities for them to feel less alone with their own private work-life balance thoughts, beliefs, assumptions or memories.
Maybe “Work-Life Balance” Isn’t Such a Bad Term After All
When I first set up my blog, I took issue with the term “work-life balance”. It felt like a cliche, and like an outdated notion. There are lots of other suggestions of more fitting expressions these days to sum up the juggle that everyone experiences when managing their work with everything else in life that matters to them.
Below are links to some blog posts I’ve written about, it if you’re interested in finding out more:
Much as it’s flawed and imperfect, however, over the years I’ve come to accept that “work-life balance” remains the most universally accepted term to sum this subject up.
Though many opine that there are preferable turns of phrase, everyone knows what you’re talking about when you say “work-life balance”.
The purpose of the blog and podcast isn’t to update or redefine “work-life balance”, but rather to celebrate and learn from the different approaches to it; and in doing so, provide advice and inspiration for how to find a balance that works for you.
So it seems more of a hindrence than a help to avoid using that phrase. Which is why I decided to add it to the podcast’s title in the first place; and why I’m happy – for now at least – to keep it in there.
Which takes me on to my final point…
It’s a Jungle Out There
The podcast market is vast. Whatever you’re curious to know or indulge in, there’s generally an episode to meet your interests or needs.
So a podcast title that is not explicit about the content is at best confusing, and at worst unfindable.
Unless you’re already well-known for something, independent podcasters are advised that to grow their podcast, it’s best to keep messaging clear and simple.
So, this is my attempt to make the podcast more accessible to potential listeners interested in the subject of work-life balance. To make it more simple to search up and share with other potential listeners.
Plus three fewer words also makes it less of a mouthful when talking about it either on the show or in person!
Have Your Say…
This rebrand is so slight that it feels like more of a refresh.
Yet, one last task remains and that’s to decide on the artwork of a refreshed/rebranded title page.
I’d love to get listeners’ input and have narrowed the choice down to four options:
