My guest this episode is the marketing professional, business owner, and podcast co-host, Dan Knowlton.
Dan readily admits to not taking himself too seriously, and says that finding fun both in and outside of work contributes to his sense of balance.
Yet, our conversation during this podcast episode takes a serious turn too, when Dan shares his story of burning out at an early stage of his career, and describes how he found the resilience and tenacity to overcome it. More crucially, he helpfully shares what tell tale signs he now recognises to indicate that he’s heading into burnout territory and what he does to mitigate the risk of this ever happening to him again.

We also cover:
📈 The pursuit of balance as a marketing professional and business owner, when there are limitless opportunities to generate more work.
🌆Corporate working cultures and how these can compromise the balance of even the most hard-working and conscientious employees.
😊The value that having fun at work contributes to an overall sense of wellbeing, and how having fun in your personal life can help you to switch off from work pressures and enhance your sense of balance too.
👬Sibling dynamics and how working together can create a sense of security and balance.
👤Fatherhood and being the parent in a partnership that doesn’t carry the mental load.
💪🏼The value that working out and taking time to go to the gym has in enhancing a sense of balance.
Finally, towards the end of the episode, Dan turns the mic on me and asks me about my own work:life ratio. This isn’t something I’ve shared on the podcast before and it catches me a little off guard.
I toyed with cropping that bit out entirely, I’ll admit, but figured no – my guests are so gracious in being open and vulnerable in sharing their work life balance stories – it’s only fair that I reciprocate.
Perhaps one day I’ll elaborate a bit more on where I’m coming from.
Meanwhile I hope that listeners enjoy listening to Dan’s take on the pursuit of balance, as well as a bit of marketing expertise that I took the opportunity to extract from him.
To hear more from Dan, I’d highly recommend the podcast that he and his brother Lloyd host, Business Anchors. It’s one of the few podcasts I’ve listened to lately that made me laugh out loud (not sure if that says more about me or them, but check it out and decide for yourself).
